2011 Jaguar XJ
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will the replacement key last?

The programming itself doesn't wear out. Once a fob is registered to your vehicle's immobilizer, that pairing is stable. What does wear is the physical shell: the button pads, the hinge on the battery cover, the internal battery clip if it gets stressed. Owners of XJ-generation Jaguars regularly report years of trouble-free use from a properly housed fob with periodic CR2032 swaps.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. Our work is warranted. That said, if a correctly programmed fob goes intermittent on a 2011 XJ, the problem is usually the vehicle side, not the key. This generation had known owner-reported complaints about the smart key antenna circuit and body control module communication. Symptoms show up as a key-not-detected warning on both fobs, or the car not recognizing the key until you reposition it closer to the start button or open a door mid-sequence.

Q: My 2011 XJ recognizes the key sometimes and not others. Both fobs do it. What's going on?

That pattern, where two separate fobs show the same intermittent behavior, almost always points to the vehicle's antenna circuit or the module reading the signal, not the fobs themselves. On the 2011 XJ, the smart key antennas are distributed through the cabin and the door handles, and a degraded antenna loop or a module communication fault will affect both fobs equally since both are broadcasting fine, but the car isn't reliably hearing them. Replacing a fob won't fix it.

Q: Can I add a spare key to my 2011 XJ myself, or does it need a shop?

It needs a shop. There is no onboard add-a-key sequence on this system, no ignition-turn cycle, no button combination that registers a new fob. Programming a smart key to the 2011 XJ requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port to communicate with the immobilizer and authorize the new fob. If you bought a fob online to save money on the blank, that part is fine, bring it along.

2011 Jaguar XJ Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from an estate sale coordinator working out of a charity thrift store in Eastlake, Chula Vista. She had a donor pickup scheduled that morning. Furniture from an elderly donor's home, movers already rolling, and her 2011 Jaguar XJ sitting dead in the lot. The smart key wasn't being recognized. The car wasn't starting. The window was closing fast.

She had called the Jaguar dealer first. Next available slot was the following day.

I told her I was about 20 minutes out, and I meant it.

When I got there, I connected through the OBD port and started reading the vehicle security system. The fob itself was the issue, a five-button unit that had given up internally. The transponder had gone silent, likely from a hairline failure in the antenna coil that nobody would ever see just looking at the fob. The shell looked fine. The battery tested okay. But the car couldn't hear it.

I had a compatible replacement in the van. I programmed the new fob to the vehicle on site, confirmed the immobilizer accepted it, tested all five buttons, walked the door handles, and verified engine start twice.

From her first call to the engine running was about 45 minutes. The pickup happened on time. The movers never knew anything had gone wrong.

She mentioned later what the dealer had quoted her. I'll just say she saved a good chunk.

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Jaguar vehicles?▼

We use OEM-spec fobs matched to your vehicle's system, the factory FCC ID, correct transponder configuration, and the right frequency. This matters more on Jaguars than a lot of people expect. Here's the thing owners run into with JLR vehicles: some key fobs and the modules they pair with are single-use programmable.
