Got a call from a guy in Downtown Fallbrook on a Saturday morning. He had a 2017 Jaguar XJ, and his fob had been giving him grief for a couple of weeks. Range was shrinking, the door handles were not always waking up when he walked up, and twice that week the car had thrown a key-not-detected warning on the dash when the fob was sitting right in the cupholder.
He had already swapped the battery himself. That is almost always the first move, and it made sense. The problem was the range did not fully come back, and the handle sensors were still inconsistent. He found me online, watched through some of my key replacement footage, and figured it was worth a call before he let the dealer talk him into something bigger.
When I got there he was standing in the driveway next to the car, fob in hand, doing that thing where you point it closer and closer to the door like proximity will fix whatever the real issue is. I know that move.
I opened the fob on the hood. His battery swap had been done right, the CR2032 was seated correctly. But the housing had a small crack near the button assembly, barely visible, just enough to put slight pressure on the board inside. That kind of stress can mess with signal consistency in a way that has nothing to do with the battery or the car's receiver.
We went through the full check: all five buttons, both door handles, start-button response, and range from about 30 feet out. Everything was working correctly once we addressed the housing issue. No reprogramming needed, no module work, no tow to the dealer.
The dealer route would have started with a diagnostic fee and probably a recommendation to replace the fob outright, maybe look at the body control module for good measure. He saved a good chunk just by having someone who knew what to actually look for show up at his house.
