There is a British car shop over near Ferry Landing in Coronado, the kind of place that does proper work on European vehicles and has a reputation to protect. They had a 2012 Jaguar XJ on the lift mid-repair and somewhere in the shuffle, the only key went missing. The customer was picking up that afternoon.

I got there and found the car with a dead battery from sitting on the lift with accessories running. That was the first thing to sort. Once we had power stable, I connected through the OBD port, read the immobilizer data, and got to work on a replacement fob. The factory fob for this XJ is a 5-button unit with a CR2032, and I had the right blank on the van.
Programming on this generation of XJ requires going into the vehicle security system properly. You cannot shortcut it. I ran the full sequence, verified the fob was recognized, confirmed the engine would start, and walked every button. Lock, unlock, the whole board. Thirty minutes from parking my van to handing over a working key.
The shop finished the repair. The customer picked up on time. The shop owner did not have to explain a delay or a dealer bill that came out of nowhere. That is the job.
