2000 Jaguar XJ
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2000 Jaguar XJ Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A retired architect in the Cedros Design District had been nursing a cracked key head for months. The blade was fine, but the plastic housing had split along the top and he was half-convinced the chip inside was damaged. The car had started stalling out right after ignition a couple of times, which rattled him enough that he finally called.

He was parked in a surface lot off South Cedros Avenue. I pulled up, looked at the key before touching anything else. The crack ran right through the head but the blade was intact and the chip was still seated. I tested it in the ignition while watching what the car did. It started clean, no stall. Whatever the intermittent stalling was, it was not the key.

What he actually needed was a working spare cut and programmed to the car. He had never had one, which is how a lot of XJ owners end up. One key, no backup, and the day it fails they are stranded.

I cut a replacement key blade to his vehicle on site, programmed the transponder chip to the immobilizer using my diagnostic equipment, and confirmed it started the car cleanly two times in a row before handing it over. He kept the cracked original as the backup since it was still functional.

The whole job was done in the parking lot, no tow, no appointment wait, no lounge. He paid a fraction of what the dealer had quoted him the last time a key question came up.
