2001 Jaguar XJ
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you're not a scam locksmith?

It's a fair question, especially on a luxury vehicle call. The pattern with scam operations is a low number on the phone that changes dramatically when the tech sees what you're driving. Jaguar owners get targeted because the assumption is they'll pay whatever it takes. EZ Car Keyz gives you a firm quote on the phone based on your exact vehicle and key type. The number doesn't change when I pull up.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like my original?

Yes. On the 2001 XJ, the remote flip key handles door locks via the remote buttons and the blade gets you in manually if the battery is dead or the remote signal fails. I program the replacement so the immobilizer recognizes it and the remote functions are all active. Then I test each button and the blade before the job is done. That last part matters more than it sounds.

Q: My 2001 XJ starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Is the key dead?

Not necessarily. If the car starts and drives normally, the immobilizer side of the key is still doing its job. What you're describing is a remote function issue, and on these the first thing to check is the CR2032 battery in the fob. That cell powers the remote transmitter, not the transponder side. A weak battery kills the remote range long before it causes any start problem.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2001 XJ. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2001 XJ doesn't have an owner-accessible self-programming sequence for the remote flip key. Registering a new fob to the vehicle requires professional diagnostic equipment communicating with the vehicle's security system. There's no ignition-turn procedure or button sequence that works here. The other thing worth knowing: not every fob sold online for this application will actually accept programming. Quality varies by supplier and some shells simply don't behave.

2001 Jaguar XJ Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A music teacher in the Casa de Oro area of Spring Valley called about her 2001 Jaguar XJ on a Monday morning.

The fob had been acting up for a few days, short range, then no response at all, and that morning it stopped unlocking the car entirely. She used the blade to get in, drove to the violin studio where she teaches lessons, and called the dealer from the parking lot.

They told her Thursday. Earliest available.

She teaches every afternoon. She drives her kids to school every morning. Thursday was not a real option.

I was in that parking lot by early afternoon the same day. She had a replacement fob she had already ordered online, which was a reasonable move, except it had shown up uncut and unprogrammed with no instructions. It was sitting in the cup holder doing nothing.

I cut the blade to her vehicle and ran the programming sequence with my Jaguar-capable equipment. Then I tested every function before handing it back: remote lock, remote unlock, the trunk release button, and the blade in the door lock itself. Everything confirmed.

She made it home in time to get her kids. The dealer was still three days out.

Jaguar XJ Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Jaguar vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz holds a California BSIS locksmith company license (LCO#6792) and is fully insured. Jaguar key work on a 2001 XJ is not a job most general locksmiths take on because the programming side requires equipment and experience specific to this platform. A lot of shops that advertise "all makes and models" will quote you over the phone and then tell you on-site they can't do Jaguar.
