Will the replacement key work exactly like my original?

Yes. On the 2001 XJ, the remote flip key handles door locks via the remote buttons and the blade gets you in manually if the battery is dead or the remote signal fails. I program the replacement so the immobilizer recognizes it and the remote functions are all active. Then I test each button and the blade before the job is done.

Not necessarily. If the car starts and drives normally, the immobilizer side of the key is still doing its job. What you're describing is a remote function issue, and on these the first thing to check is the CR2032 battery in the fob. That cell powers the remote transmitter, not the transponder side. A weak battery kills the remote range long before it causes any start problem.

Swap the CR2032, make sure the contacts inside the fob are clean and making good contact, and retest at close range first. If remote function comes back, you're done. If the car starts but the remote stays dead even with a fresh battery, the fob itself may need to be looked at, or there's something worth diagnosing on the receiver side. Either way, a working start with a dead remote is a much smaller problem than the other way around.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2001 XJ. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2001 XJ doesn't have an owner-accessible self-programming sequence for the remote flip key. Registering a new fob to the vehicle requires professional diagnostic equipment communicating with the vehicle's security system. There's no ignition-turn procedure or button sequence that works here.

The other thing worth knowing: not every fob sold online for this application will actually accept programming. Quality varies by supplier and some shells simply don't behave. If you already have a fob you bought online, bring it when you call. I'll tell you upfront whether it's workable or whether we need to source a reliable one before we start.
