I got a call from a parking lot off Bancroft in Spring Valley. Early morning, still dark. A woman had her only key to a 2004 Mazda 3, and the head had been cracking for a while. She knew it was going, kept meaning to get a spare made. That morning it finally gave out at the pivot point and the blade separated when she pulled it from the ignition.

Because the old key was still intact enough to read, I could work with the original transponder chip rather than starting from scratch. I extracted the broken blade from the ignition with my blade extractor, then got to work on cutting a new key blade to the vehicle and programming a fresh key with the correct transponder configuration to match what the immobilizer already had on record. Having the original key pieces in hand made the whole job shorter and cleaner than an all-keys-lost call.
She waited, watched the whole thing, asked good questions about how the chip part actually works. I walked her through it. When she turned the key and the engine ran without hesitation, she just nodded like she had expected it to go right and was relieved it did.
The dealer option would have taken a day minimum and cost her a good chunk more. She saved enough to matter. More importantly, she made it to where she was going.
