A student over in the CSUSM Area called me on a Tuesday afternoon. She had one key to her 2008 Mazda 3 and it had snapped - the blade broke off inside the ignition cylinder. The head with the chip was sitting in her hand. The car was parked in a campus-adjacent lot and she had a lab in an hour.
First thing I did was talk her through finding the VIN. She had her insurance card in her glove box, which she could get to because the door lock is separate from the ignition. VIN was right there. That let me confirm the key type and prep the right blank before I got in the van.
Extraction came first. Broken blade in an ignition cylinder is a careful job - you don't want to push it deeper or damage the wafers. Got it out clean.
Then I cut a replacement blade to the vehicle and enrolled the transponder chip through the diagnostic port. The immobilizer light on the dash cycled off and stayed off. I ran the engine for a couple of minutes in the lot just to let the system settle and confirm it wasn't going to stall on her halfway to class.
She made her lab. I don't know if she was on time, but she got there.
