2017 Mazda 3
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2017 Mazda 3 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked off Westwood in Rancho Bernardo, wrapping up a different job, when a call came in from a guy who'd been sitting in a smoothie shop parking lot for about an hour trying to figure out his next move.

He had a 2017 Mazda 3 and exactly one key. That key still worked, but he'd been putting off getting a spare for two years, and that morning his wife asked him what the plan was if he lost it. He didn't have a good answer, so he called the dealer. The number they quoted him sat wrong enough that he went looking for another option and found me.

I drove over. The car was right there in the lot, which made everything easy.

The 2017 Mazda 3 smart key system requires diagnostic equipment to register a new fob. There's a security wait built into the process, not a bug, just how Mazda designed the enrollment sequence on this generation. You can't shortcut it. I connected through the OBD port, read the system, and let the timer run. While that was going, I cut the key blade so the physical emergency insert would work in the door and the column.

By the time the security sequence cleared, the blade was ready. Registered the new fob, tested all four buttons, walked both doors, confirmed push-button start. The whole thing was about 35 minutes on site.

He texted his wife a photo of two keys. That was the whole human moment. He didn't say anything dramatic. Just sent the photo.

The dealer comparison came up on its own when he asked. I told him what I charge. He said the dealer wanted a number that made this feel like a very easy decision.
