I got a call from a guy running a landscaping crew, parked near the Cedros Design District in Solana Beach. He had a 2011 Mazda 3 and the remote-head key was barely hanging together. Rubber band around the housing, blade wobbling every time he pulled it out of his pocket, and two of the four buttons not responding at all.

I moved the internals into a new shell, cut a fresh blade to match the vehicle, and tested every function: lock, unlock, trunk release, and panic. Then I verified the transponder was still communicating with the immobilizer by cycling the ignition and watching for any warning on the dash.
The whole job happened in the parking lot. He stood there watching, which I actually prefer. When he saw the original chip come out intact, still working, it clicked for him that he never needed a full replacement at all.
He walked away with a key that felt new. The dealer quote was still sitting in his phone as a screenshot. He saved a good chunk.
