I got a call from a property manager who lives up in Ramona Highlands. She had been dealing with an intermittent issue on her 2024 Mazda 3 for about a week. Some mornings the car would start without a problem. Other mornings she would sit down, press the start button, and get a key-not-detected warning on the dash. The shell had a hairline crack near the seam. When I opened it, the CR2025 was loose and the positive contact had a slight bow to it from the impact. The battery was reading low voltage on top of that.
I replaced the cell with a fresh CR2025, straightened the contact plate, and verified the shell was closing with enough tension to hold everything seated. Then I ran the fob through diagnostics at the OBD port to check how the immobilizer was seeing it, confirmed the signal was reading clean, and walked through every button function plus the emergency insert key.
She did not need a new fob. She needed the one she had put back together correctly. Took about forty minutes including the diagnostic check. The dealer route would have been four days, a tow if the car had gotten to the point of not starting at all, and a cost that was a significant step up from what she paid me.
