Out in Richland, a stay-at-home dad flagged me down at his duplex driveway. He had his 2014 Mazda 3 parked right there, fob in hand, and the housing had split clean along the seam from a concrete drop. The buttons were barely holding on and one corner of the shell had cracked through to where the internals were exposed.
He'd already called the dealer. They quoted him a full fob replacement, the whole unit, because that's the path of least resistance on their end. What nobody told him was that the electronics inside his fob were completely intact. The circuit board, the transponder, the battery contacts -- all of it was reading fine when I checked it.
So instead of replacing what wasn't broken, I transferred his working internals into a fresh fob housing, dropped in a new CR2025, and verified every function: lock, unlock, the panic button, and push-button start. Walked the doors, tested the handle sensors, and had him try it himself before I packed up.
The dealer's quote was for parts and labor on a whole new unit, then programming on top. He paid a fraction of that for a shell swap and battery. The only thing wrong with his fob was the plastic, and that's exactly what we replaced.
