I got a text from a guy in Scripps Ranch on a Saturday afternoon. His 2021 Mazda 3 fob had stopped responding, and he'd already done the obvious thing: new battery. Didn't help. He was in the parking lot of a shopping center off Scripps Poway Parkway, and the car wouldn't acknowledge the fob at all. No door unlock, no response from the push-button area inside. He'd bought a replacement cell from the store right there in the parking lot, which was the right call, but the old battery had been sitting in there long enough to leave a film on the contacts inside the housing. New battery, dirty contacts, same result. I cleaned the contact points, reseated the CR2025, and tested range before touching anything else.
That fixed the fob function. But the push-button start was still giving him a warning, so I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port to check the immobilizer side. The vehicle security system had logged a communication fault, likely from repeated failed attempts while the fob was unresponsive. Cleared it, cycled the system, and walked every function: door handles, interior start button, lock and unlock. Everything came back clean.
He'd spent a good part of his afternoon thinking he needed a new fob or a dealer visit. He needed neither. The whole thing wrapped up in the parking lot, done before the dinner crowd showed up.
