2009 Mazda 3 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
The call came in from a guy on his lunch break near the auto shops off Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa. He had a 2009 Mazda 3 and no spare key. He had already called the dealer that morning.
The dealer broke the quote into pieces. The key blank itself, then the cutting charge, then the programming labor, then a shop fee on top. He added it up and it was way more than he expected for what he thought was a simple spare key. They also told him to plan on leaving the car for most of the afternoon. He had patients to get back to.
He asked me flat out if my quote covered everything. I told him one number, one visit, no add-ons.
I pulled up in my van, plugged into the OBD port, and got the transponder programming going. What I always tell people with this generation Mazda: the immobilizer has a built-in wait period before it accepts a new key registration. That timer is part of the system design and nobody skips it. So I cut the key blade while the system was counting down, and by the time I was done checking the cut, we were ready to test.
He turned the key, the engine caught and stayed running. No stall, no warning light, no drama. He had a working key before he finished his coffee.
The dealer route would have taken most of his day. This took most of his lunch break.
