2004 Mazda 6
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a transponder key and why can't I just copy it at a hardware store?

Your 2004 Mazda 6 uses a transponder key. Inside the plastic head of the key is a small chip. When you insert the key and turn the ignition, the immobilizer sends a signal to that chip and waits for the right response. If the chip isn't there, or isn't programmed to match that specific car, the engine won't start or will start and cut out immediately. A hardware store duplicates the metal blade only.

Q: What tools and process do you use to program a Mazda 6 key?

For the 2004 Mazda 6, I use a professional OBD-based programmer that communicates with the immobilizer directly. This generation doesn't need factory server access or any kind of secure gateway login, so the job can be done entirely on site from the OBD port. For cutting the blade, I use a decoder specific to Mazda locks so I can read the existing key or the lock itself and cut the replacement accurately.

Q: My 2004 Mazda 6 starts and then immediately stalls. Could it be the key?

Yes, and it's one of the clearest signs of a transponder or immobilizer issue on this generation. What's happening is the engine management system detects that the transponder response is wrong or absent, and it cuts fuel within a second or two of startup. The car fires, runs for a moment, then dies. It'll do it the same way every time.

Q: Can I add a spare key myself using an ignition-turn sequence on a 2004 Mazda 6?

No. This generation requires a programmer connected to the OBD port to enroll additional transponder keys. There's no button sequence or ignition-cycling trick that registers a new chip on the 2004 Mazda 6. That kind of onboard self-programming exists on some older or simpler systems, but not here. If you bought a pre-cut key blank online, you still need a locksmith with the right equipment to complete the programming side before it'll start the car.

2004 Mazda 6 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got the call just after 4:30 in the morning. She runs a bakery, and her delivery window for three Del Mar restaurants starts before most people's alarms go off. Her 2004 Mazda 6 was sitting behind the building near Torrey Pines, and the transponder key had been getting flaky for weeks. That morning it stopped working entirely.

She had already tried the Mazda dealer's after-hours line. They told her service opens at 8.

I was pulling up behind her car by 5am. Got the door open mechanically, then connected my programmer to the OBD port and pulled up the immobilizer functions. The original key's transponder had given up. I cut a new blade, verified it in the door and then the ignition, programmed the transponder chip to the car, and ran through a full test cycle to confirm the immobilizer accepted it cleanly.

She was backing out of the lot by 5:40. The restaurants got their bread. The dealer wasn't even unlocking their front door yet.

I didn't mention what she saved compared to the dealer. She already knew.

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get burned?▼

Mazda owners run into this more than they should, and the pattern is always the same. A few things to watch for specifically: They won't give you a real estimate for your specific year and model over the phone. Any working locksmith knows what a 2004 Mazda 6 transponder job involves. If they hedge or say they can't quote until they see it, that's a setup. They show up and start working before agreeing on a price. That's intentional.
