But that thicker cell doesn't sit flat in the tray, contact pressure becomes inconsistent, and you get exactly the symptom you're describing. Open the fob, confirm the battery size, and reseat it correctly. Clean the contact points with a dry cloth while you're in there. That fixes it more often than not. If range is still short after a fresh correct battery is properly seated, the fob's internal antenna may be damaged, which means a replacement fob and a programming visit.
