2012 Mazda 6
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will the replacement key last?

A properly made replacement should hold up as long as your original. The programming doesn't wear out. What does wear is the physical fob over time, especially the battery tray contacts and the fold-out blade hinge if you're hard on it. The 2012 Mazda 6 fob has that folding emergency blade, and the pivot mechanism on these can get stiff or develop play after years of use.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. We come back and make it right. That's the whole warranty. The most common post-job failure on Smart Key setups like the 2012 Mazda 6 isn't the programming, it's a loose battery contact or a fob that got pried open the wrong way at some point. If remote function drops out but the car still starts, that's usually the fob. If the car won't start at all, that points somewhere else and we diagnose it on site.

Q: I have a 2012 Mazda 6 and the car starts fine but the remote buttons don't work from more than a few feet away. Is the fob going bad?

Short range on this fob, when the car still starts normally, almost always comes down to one of three things: low battery, a battery seated slightly off, or corroded contact points inside the fob. The 2012 Mazda 6 uses a CR2025. People frequently install a CR2032 because it looks close enough and the cover still closes. But that thicker cell doesn't sit flat in the tray, contact pressure becomes inconsistent, and you get exactly the symptom you're describing.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2012 Mazda 6. Can you still make a replacement without any working key?

Yes, all-keys-lost is a job we handle. It takes longer than adding a spare when you have a working key, because the immobilizer has to be accessed through the diagnostic port to register a new fob from scratch. The old keys get erased in the process so they can't be used to start the car if they turn up later.

2012 Mazda 6 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A store manager at a thrift shop near Rancho Del Rey in Chula Vista called me on a Tuesday afternoon. She had a customer waiting on a furniture pickup and she needed to move her 2012 Mazda 6.

The fob had been acting up for a couple of weeks, range getting shorter, then spotty, and that morning it stopped responding altogether. She tried the door handle, nothing. Stood there clicking like the fob was going to change its mind.

I got there and the first thing I did was confirm the emergency blade was in the fob and used it to get the door open. A lot of people forget that blade is there and start panicking before they ever check. She had no idea it existed.

The fob battery was a CR2032. Wrong size for this vehicle. It looks like it fits, and the cover closes, but it sits slightly high in the tray and the contact pressure is inconsistent. Swapped in the correct CR2025, reseated it properly, and tested every button. Lock, unlock, trunk release, and the panic function all came back immediately. Receiver was fine. Fob was fine. The whole thing was a battery mismatch.

She was moving furniture within twenty minutes of me pulling up. No programming, no parts, no drama.

The dealer would have had her waiting days for an appointment. She saved a good chunk just by having someone come out who knew what to actually check first.

Mazda 6 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Mazda vehicles?▼

We use OEM-spec components matched to the specific vehicle. For the 2012 Mazda 6 Smart Key, that means the correct fob shell, the correct transponder chip, and a CR2025 battery, not whatever generic cell comes loose in the packaging. The aftermarket fob problem on Mazdas is well-documented in owner forums. Cheap boards from unverified sources can cause a key warning to stay lit on the dash even after programming, or buttons that work for a day and then quit.
