I got a call out to a shop on the Chula Vista side near Millenia. A shop foreman had been standing around for the better part of an afternoon waiting for his customer's 2006 Mazda 6 to get sorted. Another locksmith had already attempted the job. Somewhere during the security wait sequence, the programming tool lost connection, and the vehicle's immobilizer module ended up in a fault state. The customer was still in the waiting room. The car would not start. The first locksmith was gone.
When I got there, the module was throwing faults and refusing to enter a clean programming session. Then I cleared the fault state through the OBD port and gave the system a few minutes to settle before I touched anything else.
The fob the customer had was the correct one for the vehicle, a 3-button unit with the factory FCC ID on the label. Good news there. I ran the programming sequence from scratch, watched the security countdown complete without interruption, and registered two keys into the system the way this platform requires.
First clean attempt, the module accepted both. Car started. Customer had been waiting two hours total at that point and was pretty quiet when he walked out. Not angry, just tired.
The dealer would have meant a tow, a wait for an appointment slot, and a bill that would have hurt. He paid a fraction of that and drove home same afternoon.
