Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2015 Mazda 6 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Shadowridge, off one of those quiet side streets near the golf course, I got a call on a Sunday morning from a guy who had already been through it once. An off-duty paramedic, early riser, and clearly not in the mood to repeat the story more than once.

Another locksmith had come out, done the job, taken his money, and left. The car would crank, almost catch, and then die within a couple of seconds. Every time. He said the first guy told him the car had a computer problem and that he needed to tow it to the dealer.

It didn't have a computer problem.

What it had was an incomplete key learn. Mazda's immobilizer registration process has a timed security wait built into it. If that window gets interrupted or the procedure doesn't run all the way through, the system can accept the key data temporarily without writing it to permanent memory. The car acts like it started to accept the new key, but on the next cycle it's gone. Crank, almost start, stall. That's the pattern.

I connected through the OBD port with my programmer, cleared the incomplete key data, pulled a fresh PIN, and ran the full registration sequence without cutting it short. Confirmed the fob was permanently registered. Tested the start three times in a row, all four buttons, and walked him through the emergency blade in the fob because he didn't know it was there.

He'd already paid someone else once. I didn't bring that up again after he mentioned it. We both just moved on.
