Start with the battery. A weak CR2025 is behind more of these calls than anything else. Swap it for a fresh one and make sure it's actually a CR2025, not a CR2032.

If the warning continues, try the backup start: hold the fob body directly against the start button and press with your foot on the brake. The car has a short-range antenna right at that button for low-battery situations, and this gets a lot of people moving again when the fob is marginal.

If neither of those fixes it, the issue could be the fob itself, the antenna ring around the start button, or something in the immobilizer system. That's when you call me. No. The 2016 Mazda 6 smart key system does not have a DIY pairing sequence. There is no ignition-turn cycle or button combination that will register a new fob. Programming requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port to communicate with the immobilizer and enroll the new fob's identity.

The fob you bought online may be a perfectly usable blank, but it is inert until it gets paired. Bring the fob and the car together and I'll handle the enrollment on site.
