There is a pet supply store over near Carlton Hills in Santee, and a dog walker who parks there pretty regularly reached out after her 2018 Mazda 6 started acting up with a key she had made by another locksmith.
It had not failed all at once. The first few days the replacement key worked fine. Then the push-to-start started showing a key-not-detected warning on and off. When I got there, I went through the fob first. The CR2025 battery was reading low, which explains why intermittent got worse. But a weak battery alone does not cause a key to fail entirely, so I kept going. I read the transponder chip data from the key the previous locksmith had used. The chip was close to what the Mazda system expects but not a correct match. On this vehicle's immobilizer, a near-match can register and pass initial verification, then get rejected after the system runs deeper checks over subsequent drive cycles. That is exactly what happened. The car accepted the key on day one and quietly flagged it over the following week.
I programmed a new key using the correct transponder chip, registered it through the diagnostic port, and confirmed the second key slot was also populated so the immobilizer would accept the configuration. Tested every button, tested push-to-start, walked the door handles. Everything solid.
She asked if the dealer could have caught this faster. Maybe. But she also would have needed a tow, a wait, and a bill she was not ready for. I was done in her parking lot in about forty minutes.
