I got a call at 6:24 in the morning from a roofing contractor parked at a supply yard off Palomar Airport Road, right on the edge of Bressi Ranch. His crew was already there, the truck was empty, and the yard was open. His 2007 Mazda 6 was not going anywhere.
He had tried the fob repeatedly. The car gave him nothing. No response on the doors, key would turn but the engine cranked and died immediately, and the dash was showing a key warning light. He figured the fob battery was dead. He was half right.
I was stocked and on the road before 6:30. Pulled into the yard in about 25 minutes.
The CR2025 was in fact dead, almost zero voltage. I swapped it first, always start there. But after the fresh battery the fob still was not registering with the car. That is the part people do not expect. On this generation, a prolonged dead-battery state can cause the vehicle security system to lose the fob from its memory. The transponder is not communicating and the car will not stay running even if the engine turns over. It is not a mechanical problem, it is an enrollment problem.
I connected through the OBD port with my programming equipment, cleared the old registration, and re-enrolled the fob. There is a timed security wait built into the process on these cars that you simply sit through. No skipping it, no trick to shorten it.
Total hands-on time was right around 30 minutes including the wait. He was loaded and pulling out of that yard before 7:30.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a significant wait just for an appointment, plus a tow since the car would not drive. What he paid me was a fraction of that, and his crew did not lose a single billable hour standing around.
