What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2008 Armada?

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer or a tow truck. All-keys-lost on the Armada's Intelligent Key system does require diagnostic equipment - there's no ignition-turn trick or button sequence that registers a new fob on this vehicle. But that doesn't mean you need a dealer.

Only the keys physically present during programming get enrolled. When the job is done, the old keys - lost, stolen, or just floating around somewhere - won't start the vehicle. If your keys were stolen rather than misplaced, this step matters a lot, and we treat it as standard procedure either way.

Does my 2008 Armada Intelligent Key have a hidden emergency blade inside it?

It does. There's a small release on the fob body - press it and slide the metal blade out. That blade gets you into the driver's door manually if the fob battery is completely dead.

Getting the car started after you're inside is a separate step. On this generation Armada, hold the fob body directly against the start button and press the brake pedal at the same time. The vehicle is designed to read the fob at close range even when the battery has nothing left. Most owners have no idea this exists until they're standing in a parking lot at night wondering why the start button isn't responding.

One thing worth knowing: the door handle area on some of these has a small cover that conceals the lock cylinder. If you've never used the blade entry, take thirty seconds to locate it before you need it under pressure.

My 2008 Armada starts fine but the fob locks and unlocks are intermittent. What's going on?

This is a common complaint on this generation and it usually points to one of three things: weak battery contact in the fob, a receiver antenna issue in the vehicle, or a fob that's taken some damage internally from a drop.

Start with the fob. Open it, reseat the CR2025, and wipe the contacts. If the problem is range-related and position-dependent - meaning it works if you point the fob a certain way but not others - that usually means the internal coil or circuit board in the fob has a hairline crack from impact. A replacement fob shell or a new fob altogether fixes that.

If the battery and fob check out clean but the car is still inconsistent, the receive antenna in the vehicle is the next thing to look at. On this platform, the antenna for the door lock signal is separate from the engine start circuit, which is why you can have a fob that starts the car reliably but acts unreliable on lock and unlock. That's a vehicle-side diagnosis, not a key issue.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2008 Armada. Can I program it myself?

No. The Intelligent Key system on this vehicle doesn't have a self-programming mode. You need diagnostic equipment to register the fob to the immobilizer. The fob you bought online will work fine once it's programmed - you don't need to buy one from the dealer. But it won't do anything sitting in your hand until it's been enrolled. Bring the vehicle and the unprogrammed fob to us, or we come to you in Chula Vista, and we handle the registration on site.
