I got a call from a guy parked near the Lomas Santa Fe area of Solana Beach. He had his 2025 Armada, a full-size SUV that takes up most of any parking spot, sitting in a lot with a fob that had stopped waking the vehicle. Touch the handle, nothing. Walk up, nothing. He had already done the obvious thing and swapped the CR2032 himself. Still nothing.
When I pulled up, he met me at the passenger side. First thing I did was use the mechanical key blade inside the fob to open the door manually, just to rule out a dead battery on the vehicle side. The truck started fine once we got in. So the vehicle was alive. The fob was the problem.
I pulled the fob apart on the center console. The new CR2032 he had put in was seated correctly, contacts looked clean. But when I tested signal output, it was reading weak. These things do fail outright. The fob itself had quit, not the battery, not the vehicle.
I programmed a new fob on site through the OBD port. Registered it to the VIN, confirmed the immobilizer accepted it, walked every button, tested the handle sensors on both front doors, and had him do a full lock and walk to make sure the passive detection was working before I packed up.
He mentioned the dealer appointment he had scheduled for two days out. He canceled it from the parking lot. The whole job was done in about 45 minutes, right there in Lomas Santa Fe, for a fraction of what the dealer had quoted him over the phone.
