I got the call on a Sunday morning, parked near the Winding Walk neighborhood in Chula Vista. The owner had already been through it once. A different locksmith had come out, charged him the full rate, handed him a fob, and left. The car would crank, catch for a second, and then the immobilizer cut everything off. Two seconds of hope and then nothing.
The other tech had told him it was a module problem and that he needed to go to the dealer. He almost believed it.
I pulled up and started from scratch. First thing I did was confirm the mechanical cut on the replacement key blade was actually correct for his vehicle. It was close, but close is not the same thing. Then I connected through the OBD port with my programmer and looked at what was actually registered in the immobilizer. The previous fob data was sitting there in a half-written state, which is exactly what happens when an immobilizer registration gets rushed or abandoned mid-sequence. The security handshake on this system has a timed countdown built into the protocol. If you interrupt it or skip the confirmation step, the system accepts the data temporarily and then drops it. The car acts like it learned the key, and then it does not start.
I cleared the bad registration, ran the full immobilizer learn properly, waited out the timer, and confirmed the write completed. Then I walked every button on the fob and did a cold start with the doors closed to make sure the vehicle security system was not going to cut fuel again.
It started clean. Stayed running. He watched the whole thing from about three feet away.
He had already paid someone else for a job that did not get finished. I could not fix that part. I could make sure what I did was done right, and that when I drove away, his Armada was not going anywhere without his key.
