Yes, broken key extraction is a standard mobile job. I use specialized tools to remove the broken piece without pulling the ignition cylinder off the column, which is the move that turns a small problem into a big repair bill.

The thing to know about the 2013 Armada specifically: it uses a tilt steering column with a fairly accessible ignition housing, which works in our favor. But the internal wafers in the cylinder can get nicked or displaced when a key snaps, especially if someone tried to turn it after it broke. Once the fragment is out, I'll assess the cylinder. If it's still good, I cut a replacement key on site from the lock data and program it. If the cylinder took damage, that's a conversation we have before anything else.

Both have to be properly registered to the vehicle or you get partial function, like a key that starts the car but won't lock the doors, or one that triggers the locks but causes a no-start.

There's also a mechanical blade folded inside the housing. That's your fallback if the electronics ever fail completely. It won't authorize the engine on its own, but it'll get you into the cab.

If the shell cracks or the blade breaks while the electronics are intact, I can sometimes transfer the internals into a new housing. If the whole fob needs replacing, that's a cut-and-program job done on site.

My 2013 Armada is showing a key-not-detected warning. Where do I start?

Start with the battery in the fob. This generation uses a CR2025 and it's one of the more common points of failure. A low cell doesn't always kill the fob outright. It can cause intermittent detection, short range, or the warning showing up only sometimes, which makes it feel like a bigger problem than it is.

If you've already swapped the battery and the warning is still there, try this: hold the fob body directly against the start button and press the brake at the same time. There's a backup inductive reader built into the button housing for exactly this scenario. It bypasses the normal RF detection and reads the fob at close range.

Also check your vehicle's 12-volt battery. A weak main battery causes all kinds of electronic weirdness on these, including false key detection faults, because the receiver module doesn't have enough stable voltage to read the signal cleanly.

If none of that clears it, the issue is either the fob itself, the antenna loop around the steering column, or the receiver module. That's when you call me out.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2013 Armada. Can I program it myself?

No. The Intelligent Key system on this vehicle does not have a DIY self-programming sequence. There's no ignition-turn pattern or button combination that enrolls a new fob. Professional diagnostic equipment connected through the OBD port is required to register the new fob to the vehicle's immobilizer and receiver.

The fob you bought online is likely a valid aftermarket shell with a compatible transponder, and that's fine. It just needs to be programmed on site. Bring it when you call me out and I'll handle the pairing. You won't need to buy another one.

Can you program a second key if I only have one working fob and don't want to lose access entirely?

Yes, and honestly this is the smartest call you can make before you're in a crisis. Adding a second fob while you still have one working key is faster, simpler, and less expensive than an all-keys-lost job.

When all keys are gone, the procedure requires clearing the existing key memory from the immobilizer before anything new can be enrolled. That takes longer and involves a timed reset sequence. When you already have a working key, the add-a-key process is comparatively quick.
