I got a call on a Saturday afternoon from a guy parked at the Eastlake boat launch in Chula Vista. He'd been out on the water all morning and somewhere between tying off and walking back to the lot, his only key to the 2020 Armada was gone. He checked the dock, checked the cooler, even went back to the bait shop. Nothing. By the time he called me he'd already burned about forty minutes looking.
The Armada was locked. He had no spare. He told me he'd always meant to get a second key made but never got around to it. I hear that a lot.
I was on site in Eastlake that afternoon. The first thing I did was pick and decode the door lock mechanically so I could read the cut without an original key. Once I had the cut data, I pulled out the blank, cut the emergency insert blade to match, and verified it turned the lock cylinder before I touched anything else. No point programming a fob until you know the mechanical side is right.
After that I connected through the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost sequence on the immobilizer. On the Armada this isn't a quick two-minute job. The registration process has a timed sequence built in and the module has to be walked through it properly or it won't accept the new key. I let it run, enrolled the new fob, and then made him a second one while I was already in the system, because adding a spare at that point costs almost nothing extra in time.
Both fobs tested on every function. He started the truck right there in the lot, ran the air conditioning for a minute, and just kind of laughed. He said he'd been sitting there thinking it was going to be a tow and a Monday dealer appointment.
He saved a good chunk going that route, and more importantly his Saturday wasn't wrecked.
