How long will a replacement key last?

A properly programmed fob should give you the same service life as the original. The programming itself doesn't degrade. What does wear out over time is the battery and occasionally the battery contacts inside the fob. On the Murano fob, the CR2032 is easy to swap, but the contacts can get a faint film of corrosion that kills range before the battery is actually dead. If your fob starts acting up a few years from now, open it and clean the contacts before assuming the fob is done. If the shell cracks or the buttons get soft, the electronics can often be moved into a new case rather than replacing the whole programmed unit.

What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me. Every key I make carries a warranty. If it loses remote function, stops starting the car, or throws a key-not-detected warning, I come back and sort it out.

One thing worth knowing about this generation: owners have reported situations where the door lock and unlock functions still work on a fob, but the vehicle stops recognizing it for starting. That split behavior points toward the immobilizer side of the system rather than the RF transmitter, and it usually means either a fob issue or the antenna ring around the ignition area. Either way, it's diagnosable and fixable on site. Buying a fob online and having someone you can't reach do the programming is where people get stuck with no recourse. That's not a situation I leave my customers in.

I bought a fob online. Can you just program it to my 2005 Murano?

Sometimes, but there are a few things to check first. The fob has to match your vehicle's specific configuration, including the correct button count and the correct internal hardware. A fob that looks identical externally can have different internals that won't pair to your system. Bring what you have and I'll verify it before we start. If it's compatible, I can program it. This is a known split failure mode on the Intelligent Key system from this era. The fob has two jobs: RF transmission for the locks, and a separate signal that the immobilizer system reads when you go to start the car. Those two functions can fail independently.

If the locks work but the start function doesn't, the RF side of the fob is alive. The issue is most likely with the transponder element inside the fob, the antenna in the vehicle that reads it, or the immobilizer module itself. A weak battery can cause this too, because the start-recognition signal requires more power than a simple lock or unlock command. First move is a fresh CR2032 seated properly. If that doesn't fix it, the diagnosis is quick and I can tell you on site whether it's the fob or something in the car.
