2005 Nissan Murano
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement key last?

A properly programmed fob should give you the same service life as the original. The programming itself doesn't degrade. What does wear out over time is the battery and occasionally the battery contacts inside the fob. On the Murano fob, the CR2032 is easy to swap, but the contacts can get a faint film of corrosion that kills range before the battery is actually dead.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me. Every key I make carries a warranty. If it loses remote function, stops starting the car, or throws a key-not-detected warning, I come back and sort it out. One thing worth knowing about this generation: owners have reported situations where the door lock and unlock functions still work on a fob, but the vehicle stops recognizing it for starting.

Q: I bought a fob online. Can you just program it to my 2005 Murano?

Sometimes, but there are a few things to check first. The fob has to match your vehicle's specific configuration, including the correct button count and the correct internal hardware. A fob that looks identical externally can have different internals that won't pair to your system. Bring what you have and I'll verify it before we start. If it's compatible, I can program it. If it's not, I'll tell you upfront and supply one that is.

Q: My 2005 Murano fob unlocks the doors fine but the car won't recognize it to start. What's going on?

This is a known split failure mode on the Intelligent Key system from this era. The fob has two jobs: RF transmission for the locks, and a separate signal that the immobilizer system reads when you go to start the car. Those two functions can fail independently. If the locks work but the start function doesn't, the RF side of the fob is alive.

2005 Nissan Murano Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was working a job in the Lomas Santa Fe area of Solana Beach when this one came in. A Pilates instructor had a break between classes and needed a spare key made for her 2005 Murano. She had already texted me the VIN before I left my previous stop, which is exactly the kind of prep that makes everything go faster.

Because she had a working fob with her and the VIN in hand, I already knew the key configuration before I arrived. I had the correct blank pulled and ready in the van on the drive over. She met me in the parking lot with her original fob, her ID, and about twenty minutes of free time before her next class started.

The Intelligent Key system on this generation pairs through the diagnostic port. With a working key present, it is an add-a-key procedure rather than an all-keys-lost reset, which cuts the time down considerably. I paired the new fob, verified it started the car, checked the door handles, and walked every button before handing it to her.

She was back inside before her students arrived. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days just to get the key ordered, then another appointment for programming. I was done in under twenty minutes, parked in the same lot.

Nissan Murano Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Nissan vehicles?▼

I use blanks that are verified to spec for the specific system on your vehicle. On the Intelligent Key fobs for this generation of Murano, aftermarket quality is genuinely inconsistent. Nissan dealers have been known to decline programming of third-party fobs entirely, and the reason is not just policy. Some aftermarket blanks have transponder components that don't communicate reliably with the vehicle's security system, which means the key can appear to program correctly but then fail intermittently in real use.
