In this case, I recovered through OBD by stabilizing the battery with my jump pack first, then clearing the fault codes with my IM608 before starting a clean programming sequence. His Intelligent Key, FCC ID KR5S180144014, was a 5-button proximity fob. The fault cleared once the module reset, and the new fob learned on the first attempt. I showed the smog shop what had gone wrong so they'd know the signs.
Total job time was about an hour and a half, which is longer than normal. His bill was $241. The alternative was a flatbed to the dealer and $418 or more. I carry backup tools and backup power for when the first approach hits a wall.
