2024 Nissan Murano
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular key?

Your 2024 Murano uses a smart fob, which is a self-contained unit that does a few different things at once. It communicates passively with the vehicle's antennas so the car knows you're nearby, it sends signals to lock and unlock the doors when you press the buttons, and it carries a transponder that the immobilizer checks before allowing the engine to start. A regular transponder key does the last part only.

Q: My Nissan is showing a key-not-detected warning. What do I do?

Start simple. Swap the CR2032 battery in the fob first. It's the most common cause, and these fobs will drain a battery faster than most owners expect, sometimes under two years depending on how often the passive detection system is pinging. If the warning persists with a fresh battery, hold the fob directly against the start button while pressing the brake. The 2024 Murano has a backup detection point built into or near the start button for exactly this situation.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2024 Murano. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2024 Murano smart key requires professional programming equipment to register a new fob to the vehicle. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick for this system. Those onboard self-programming methods apply to older vehicles with a physical ignition cylinder and a simpler transponder setup. This is not that. The fob you bought online is a blank shell. It will never work until it's enrolled to your specific vehicle through the diagnostic port.

Q: Can all my existing fobs be erased if I lose one? I don't want someone finding it and getting into my car.

Yes, and this is worth doing. When a smart key is lost, the right move is a full security reset that wipes every registered fob from the vehicle's memory, then re-enrolls only the keys you have in hand. After that, the lost fob is a dead piece of plastic. It won't unlock the doors, it won't start the car, and passive detection won't respond to it. This is a job that takes programming equipment and a little time.

2024 Nissan Murano Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a gig delivery driver out in Ramona Highlands. He was already frustrated before I picked up.

He'd called one of those "$39 locksmith" ads that show up at the top of Google. Guy showed up, did something to his 2024 Murano, charged him way more than the quote, and left him with a key that would start the car but had dead buttons. No lock, no unlock, no trunk release. Just a very expensive paperweight with a working ignition.

Before I even got to quoting him, he asked how he could verify I was legitimate. Fair. I gave him my BSIS license number on the phone and told him to look it up on the state website right then, while we were talking. He did. That's the right move for any customer and I never have a problem with it.

I drove out to him, looked at what had been done, and diagnosed where the previous job went wrong. The fob had been partially registered. The transponder side paired, which is why the car would start, but the remote functions never completed enrollment. The two sides of a smart key job are not the same step, and cutting corners on one leaves you with exactly what he had.

I ran a full registration using my programming equipment, confirmed all five buttons were responsive, checked the start function, and had him test it himself before I packed up. He paid exactly what I quoted him over the phone. No surprises.

The dealer route was going to cost him a good chunk more and take days waiting for an appointment. He was back on the road making deliveries the same afternoon.

Nissan Murano Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard job. I use specialized tools to remove the broken piece without damaging the ignition cylinder. The 2024 Murano uses a push-button start, so a snapped emergency blade is most likely going to happen in the door lock cylinder rather than an ignition. Either way, the process is the same: extract cleanly, assess whether the cylinder took any damage, then cut a new blade and register the replacement fob on site.
