I got a call out of Scripps Ranch on a Tuesday evening from a guy who was convinced his 2021 Murano had developed some kind of electrical gremlin. He'd had a replacement smart key made by someone else about a week and a half earlier, and it had started behaving strangely. Most mornings it worked fine. I ran a check through the diagnostic port and pulled the fob apart. The transponder chip inside wasn't the right one for this vehicle. This is exactly the failure mode that comes from using an incompatible aftermarket key component. Someone had cut corners on the chip, and the car eventually figured it out.

I programmed a new key with the correct matching hardware and verified every function: door lock, unlock, the liftgate release, and push-to-start. Walked the whole fob before I called it done.

He asked if the dealer could have caught this faster. Maybe, but they also would have had him wait days for a parts order. I was in his driveway the same evening he called.
