It was July in Alpine, and a customer called me from a grocery store parking lot near Harbison Canyon. His 2012 Titan was sitting right there in front of him. He could see it. His groceries were in the cab, the frozen stuff already on borrowed time, and his remote-head key had just gone completely dark. No response from any button. He tried the dealer first. Next available appointment was the following morning. He called me after that.
I told him I was about fifteen minutes out.
When I got there, he was standing in the shade of the truck doing the thing everyone does: clicking the fob over and over like it might change its mind. I got the door open, pulled the key apart, and found the CR1620 sitting in there oxidized enough that it had basically stopped making contact. Fully dead. But when I looked closer, the battery contact had also taken some corrosion from sitting that way, so even a fresh cell wouldn't have seated right without cleaning it first.
I replaced the fob, cleaned the contact points, programmed the new unit through the OBD port, and walked every function. Lock, unlock, remote range from across the lot, then started the truck twice to confirm the transponder side was talking to the immobilizer cleanly.
Thirty-eight minutes from his phone call to him pulling out of that lot with cold groceries intact. The dealer would have been the next morning and cost him a good chunk more. He didn't say much. Just thanked me, grabbed his bags, and drove off. That's usually how it goes.
