Yes, broken key extraction is a standard call for me. I carry the tools to pull a snapped blade out of a Nissan ignition cylinder without forcing damage into the wafer stack. The tricky part on the Titan is that the ignition channel can take some wear from the broken piece if it gets rotated before anyone calls. Once it's out, I can cut a new key blade from the extracted fragment or from the vehicle's lock data and program it on site in the same visit.

One thing worth knowing: if the cylinder was already worn before the break, getting the piece out doesn't always mean the cylinder is good to go. Sometimes the wafers shift and the cylinder needs replacement after. I'll tell you what I'm seeing before we go any further.

What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2017 Titan?

The 2017 Titan smart key is a four-button fob that handles remote functions and also carries a transponder chip inside. There's also a metal blade folded into the fob body. That blade is there as a mechanical backup for the door lock cylinder if the fob ever stops communicating entirely.

If the fob housing cracks but the electronics inside are still intact, I can often transfer the working internals into a new shell and save you the cost of a full replacement and reprogramming. If the chip is gone or the fob is lost, then it's a full cut-and-program job done on site.

My Titan is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I do first?

Start with the CR2032. That's the battery in the fob, and a low one is the most common reason for that warning on these trucks. Pop it open, swap in a fresh cell, and make sure the battery is seated flat with good contact. Titan owners on forums report the contacts can get a slight oxidation layer that kills the connection even when the battery tests fine on a meter. A light wipe on the contacts before seating the new battery helps.

If you get that warning with a fresh battery already in, try the backup method: hold the fob face-down against the start button, press the brake, and push the button. That uses the passive antenna in the button housing and bypasses the normal radio link.

If neither of those works, the problem could be the fob's circuit board, the antenna loop around the start button, or a weak 12-volt battery in the truck pulling the system voltage low enough to cause false security faults. That's when you call me and I'll sort out which piece of the chain is actually failing.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2017 Titan. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2017 Titan smart key doesn't have an owner-accessible self-programming sequence the way some older bladed transponder keys do. Adding a new fob to this system requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port to communicate with the immobilizer and register the new key. There's no ignition-turn trick or button sequence that accomplishes it on a smart key setup like this.

The fob you bought online is just a blank until it gets programmed. Bring it to me and I can pair it to the truck on site. Buying the blank yourself and having it programmed separately is a completely reasonable way to do it.

All my keys are gone. Can you still make a key for the Titan with nothing to start from?

Yes. All-keys-lost on the 2017 Titan is a job I handle with diagnostic equipment. The process clears the existing key memory in the immobilizer and enrolls the new key fresh. It takes longer than a spare-key job because of a timed sequence built into the security reset, so plan for around 45 to 60 minutes on site.

One thing that speeds the job up: having your vehicle ID number and proof of ownership ready when I arrive. I verify ownership before touching the security system on any all-keys-lost call. That's just how it works.
