Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Nissan vehicles?

How long will the replacement key last?

A properly programmed key should hold up as long as your original. The programming itself doesn't degrade. What does wear out over time is the fob shell and the battery contacts. On Nissan smart fobs, owners on the forums consistently report that cracked shells let moisture reach the contacts, which causes intermittent failure that looks like a programming problem but isn't. If the shell ever cracks, bring it to us. We can often transplant the internals into a new case for much less than a full replacement.

The CR2032 in your 2016 Titan fob should be swapped every couple of years as routine maintenance. Don't wait for symptoms.

What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

If the fob loses remote function, throws a key-not-detected warning at start, or acts intermittently, we come back and sort it out. The diagnostic path on these usually goes: battery first, then contact condition inside the fob, then antenna ring at the ignition, then re-evaluate the programming. We go through all of it, not just the first answer.

The risk with buying a fob online and finding someone cheap to program it is that when something goes wrong at week three, neither the seller nor the programmer feels responsible. We do.

Question 4

I have a spare fob that came with the truck when I bought it used. Can you just program that one without cutting a new key?

Yes, as long as the fob is the correct unit for your truck. Bring it when I come out and I can register it to the vehicle on the same visit. The physical emergency insert key inside it will also need to be cut to your ignition if it isn't already, so you have a working backup if the battery ever dies at the wrong moment. A lot of used-truck buyers end up with a second fob that's never been paired to their specific vehicle, and it just rides in a drawer doing nothing. Worth getting it sorted.

Question 5

The Titan starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Is that a fob problem or something on the truck's end?

That split behavior, starts fine but remotes are dead, is actually a useful clue. If the vehicle is reading the fob well enough to authorize the engine, the communication link isn't completely gone. A few things cause this pattern.

First suspect is the CR2032 sitting in an awkward middle state, enough charge left for the short-range start handshake but not enough for the longer-range remote signal. Swap the battery and retest. Second possibility is the fob's transmitter itself going soft, which is a fob-side hardware issue. Third, and less common, is the body control module not responding to remote commands even though it sees the key for start. That last one needs a scan to confirm.
