Out in Channel Islands Beach in Oxnard, a delivery driver flagged me down about his 2010 Acura ZDX. His key blade had snapped clean off inside the driver door lock. He'd been using a worn key with a slight bend in it for months, and it finally gave.
Another locksmith told him the cylinder had to be drilled out and replaced. New lock, new keys, big bill.
I used a HON66 Lishi to extract the broken blade fragment without scratching the wafer surfaces inside the cylinder. Once it was out, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position, which gave me the exact bitting for a new key without needing the original blade. The chip was still intact in the cracked housing, so I pulled the HITAG 2 (46/G) transponder data off it using my VVDI2 and the Honda V4 adapter. His fob, the M3N5WY8145 with part number 72147-TK4-A71, was a 4-button unit. I rebuilt it into a fresh shell with the salvaged chip and a new CR2032.
No drilling. No cylinder swap. His original lock works with the new key exactly like it worked with the old one.
He kept turning the key back and forth in the door, testing it, like he was waiting for something to go wrong. Nothing did. He was back on his route in under an hour, for a fraction of what that other locksmith's plan would have run him.
