Over in Marina West in Oxnard, a guy called me about a 2010 Acura ZDX with a broken key. Not lost, not dead, actually broken. The blade had snapped off inside the door lock.
He told me he had been driving on a slightly bent key for a while. The bend puts uneven stress on the blade every single time you turn it, and eventually the metal gives. He called another locksmith first, who told him the lock cylinder would need to be drilled and replaced. He was looking at a new cylinder, new keys, and a significant bill. He called me for a second opinion before agreeing to any of that.
When I got to him, the broken blade fragment was still seated in the door lock. I used a Lishi pick tool to work the fragment out without touching the wafer surfaces inside the cylinder. Once it was clear, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly. That gave me the exact cut depths I needed for a new key blade without needing the original piece.
The fob itself was the other half of the job. The 4-button smart fob shell was cracked, but the internals were intact. I transferred the working components into a fresh shell, tested all four buttons, walked both door handles for touch unlock, and confirmed the start button recognized the fob normally.
No drilling. The original lock cylinder stayed in the car. His door works exactly the way it did before the blade snapped, and he left with a key that is not bent.
The other locksmith's plan would have cost him significantly more and left him with a different lock cylinder in his car. Getting a second opinion on a broken key job is always worth the call.
