A guy near Sapwi Trails Community Park in Thousand Oaks had been down to his last key on a 2003 Audi Allroad for over a year. He knew the risk. One lost key and he is stuck with a full all-keys-lost job, which is a bigger headache on these C5-platform Audis because the IMMO3 system ties the ID48 chip to the instrument cluster module, part number 4B0 920 xxx series depending on trim. Lose every key and now you are pulling the cluster or doing a more involved PIN read before anything gets programmed.
He had called the dealer in the area. They told him the key had to be ordered by VIN, quoted a wait of over a week, and the price made him put it off another six months.
I pulled up, set up my programmer on the hood, and connected through the OBD port. The IMMO3 handshake on these is not instant. The system needs to read the SKC (secret key code) from the cluster, then write the new ID48 transponder into the immobilizer memory. Took about 25 minutes total, including cutting the HU66 blade on site.
The part he liked was watching me test it. Key in, pause, engine turns. Then his original key. Then the new one again. Both registered, both starting clean, no immobilizer light staying on.
He said he had been parking the Allroad in his garage for months just to lower the odds of losing that single key somewhere out in the world. Now he keeps the spare in his wife's purse.
