BMW's immobilizer is more involved than most brands. Your 2012 BMW 5 Series has a security module, either a CAS, FEM, or BDC depending on the year, that communicates with the transponder chip in your key every time you start the car. The module sends an encrypted challenge, the chip responds with a calculated answer, and if the math checks out, the engine fires. That security layer is why a blank key from the internet won't work even if the blade fits perfectly.
