Guy in Rincon Beach Park had his G70 throw "Smart key not detected" right as he was loading surfboards. The fob would unlock doors manually but wouldn't let the car start.
He'd already swapped the CR2032 twice. Fresh Duracells both times. Still nothing. The dash kept flashing that error, and he was stuck hitting the unlock button like a caveman instead of using the door handle sensors.
I pulled up with my Autel IM608 and ran a quick scan. Battery voltage on his TQ8-FOB-4F36 showed 2.9V, which seems fine until you know these 4A chips need solid power. But here's what he didn't know: his G70 had the proximity sensor issue from TSB 21-BE-002. The car wasn't reading the key at close range.
I programmed a fresh fob through the OBD port using the 16-digit security PIN from Genesis. Cut the emergency blade on my Condor XC-Mini. Then tested every function: push-start, all six buttons, both door handles, and trunk proximity unlock.
His old fob actually worked fine once I moved it to the center console for starting. But now he had a properly programmed backup and understood the sensor quirk. Saved him whatever the dealer wanted for the same job plus their diagnostic fee.
