1998 Honda Accord Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Stuck ignitions on Honda are one of the most common calls I get, and dealers love turning a $200 problem into a $600 one. The ignition cylinder on older Civics, Accords, and CR-Vs wears down over time. The wafers inside get loose, the key starts sticking, and eventually the customer thinks the whole ignition assembly needs replacing. The dealer will happily sell them that.

A night school student at the community college lot in Ojai had been fighting his 1998 Honda Accord ignition for weeks. He'd have to wiggle the key, push it in hard, and sometimes he'd wait a minute before it would turn. The dealer quoted him 299 for a new ignition cylinder, new key, and reprogramming. He was about to book the appointment when his classmate told him to call a locksmith first.

I looked at his ignition and the issue was worn wafers, not a dead cylinder. So I used my ACDP bench tool to back up the immobilizer data, then decoded the existing lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key that matched the repaired cylinder. His separate remote fob, FCC ID , paired right back up. I showed him the old wafers so he could see the wear, and he couldn't believe the dealer wanted to replace the whole thing.

His total was 126. The ignition works smooth again, the key turns clean, and he didn't replace a single part that wasn't actually broken.
