I was working the Upper East side of Santa Barbara on a Tuesday afternoon when a text came in from a guy up near the trailhead parking off the hills. He had been hiking and came back to realize his only fob was gone. Checked his pack, checked the car, checked the ground around it. Nothing.
The Ioniq was locked. No spare at home. The nearest dealer was not close, and even if it were, an all-keys-lost job is not a walk-in same-day thing at most service departments. He dropped me a pin and I drove out with the tools already staged for Hyundai smart key work.
Getting into the car without a key on an Ioniq is a deliberate process. Once I had the door open, I connected to the OBD port and pulled the PIN from the immobilizer data before doing anything else. That step has to happen before any new fob can be enrolled. Skipping it or guessing is not an option on this system.
With the PIN confirmed, I built a new smart fob on site, enrolled it through the diagnostic interface, and verified it against the vehicle. Touch unlock on both front handles. Start button. Every function working in that parking lot before I closed my kit.
He asked what the dealer would have quoted. I told him to call and find out sometime, just to see. He laughed and said he would take my word for it.
