It was a Thursday evening at Surfers Point. The lot was still half-full, the kind of Ventura evening where the wind comes off the water and everything looks fine from the outside.
It was not fine for her. Her toddler had spiked a fever at the pediatrician and she needed to get home. Her 2022 Palisade sat in the overflow lot and would not respond to the fob. Push the start button, nothing. She tried holding the fob closer to the button the way the manual says to do it when the battery is low. Still nothing. The Hyundai dealer was already closed.
She called me and I was about twenty minutes out.
When I got there, she had the kid on her hip, fob in her other hand, doing the thing people do when they are out of ideas: pressing buttons that have already stopped working. I got the door open and looked at the fob first. The CR2032 inside had corroded the contact points. Not just dead, actively damaged. The chip was not transmitting at all, which is why even the backup proximity start was not catching.
I connected to the OBD port, pulled the vehicle PIN, registered the replacement fob, and tested every one of the seven buttons before I handed it back. Then I walked her through the manual backup start procedure, the one where you hold the fob directly to the start button if the battery ever goes low again. She had never heard of it.
From her call to engine running was 44 minutes. She got the kid home, got the medicine in him, and had him in bed before eight. The dealer would have been the next morning at minimum and cost her a lot more. Sometimes that gap matters.
