I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it to my 2023 Venue?

Maybe, but there's a catch. The fob has to match the factory FCC ID for your specific Venue. The 2023 uses a particular four-button configuration, and not every fob sold online is the right one, even if it looks identical. Sellers on Amazon and eBay list fobs with broad vehicle compatibility claims that don't always hold up.

If you bring me a fob and it's the correct unit for your car, I can attempt to program it. If it's the wrong fob, programming won't work and you've wasted money on the part. Best move is to call before you buy anything. I can confirm what you actually need.

Also keep in mind: the fob is only one piece. The blade still needs to be cut to your car, and enrollment still requires the diagnostic process through the OBD port. The fob being in your hand doesn't skip any of that.

Question 5

My fob works fine for locks but the car won't recognize it to start. What's going on?

This is a known pattern on smart key systems and it usually points to one of two things: a weak battery that still has enough power for the short-range lock and unlock signal but not enough for the start authentication handshake, or an issue with the vehicle's receiving antenna.

Try the contact-close test first. Hold the fob directly against the start button and press. If the car starts that way, the fob is enrolled and the battery or antenna signal is the weak link. Swap the CR2032 and retest before assuming anything else is wrong.

If the car still won't start even contact-close, the fob may have lost its enrollment, which means a programming visit. That's a different job, but it's still something I can handle at the vehicle in Thousand Oaks without a tow.
