Out in West Simi Valley, on a Saturday afternoon, a guy called me from the parking area off the trail that runs up toward the reservoir. He'd gone out for a few hours, came back, and his only I-Pace smart key was gone. Checked every pocket, retraced part of the trail, nothing. The car was just sitting there, locked, with no way in and no way to start it.
He'd already called the Jaguar dealer. They told him it would need to be flatbedded to their service department, that the job would take a couple of days minimum, and that he should expect a significant bill. The tow alone from that lot was going to be painful.

When I pulled up, the first order of business was getting inside the car without damaging anything. I used the physical entry method to access the door, got in clean, and then set up my JLR-capable diagnostic equipment. On the 2023 I-Pace, an all-keys-lost job requires more than a basic OBD pass-through. The key management module on this generation holds the authorization data, and registering new keys means communicating with it properly through the right tooling.
I worked through the module, cleared the lost key from the system, and enrolled a new five-button smart fob matched to his VIN. Then I walked every function before I called it done. Door handles, lock, unlock, and the remaining buttons. The car started in the same lot he'd been stranded in.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted, and he didn't need a tow.
