Late Saturday in Oxnard, right off Saviers Road, a nurse's K5 decided her smart key was a stranger. Dashboard threw up "Smart Key not detected" and the push button went dead.
She'd already swapped the CR2032 twice. Fresh battery, same problem. The car sat locked in her apartment complex while she tried to figure out Monday's shift without wheels. Her sister mentioned seeing my van around the business district.
I pulled up with the Autel IM608. First thing: check if TSB 21-BE-002 applied. The BCM software was outdated, classic K5 issue. But updating that meant nothing if the key itself was fried. I scanned the CQOFD00790 fob directly. The PCF7953M chip responded fine, just wasn't talking to the car anymore.
Through the OBD port, I cleared the stored keys and re-registered hers fresh. The Smartra 4 system takes about eight minutes to cycle through the security handshake. While we waited, she asked about the dealer option. They wanted her to flatbed it in, then wait three days for programming.
Key registered. Push button lit up orange like it should. All five buttons worked: lock, unlock, trunk, panic, remote start. Quick walk around to test the proximity sensors at each door handle.
She saved a chunk compared to the dealer route, kept her car at home, and made her Sunday shift.
