Had a K5 owner meet me at the CVS parking lot on Gonzales Road. His smart key worked fine until he dropped it getting out at Starbucks. Now the car wouldn't see it half the time.
I popped open the CQOFD00790 fob right there on his trunk lid. The CR2032 was new, but one of the battery tabs had bent from the impact. Common problem with these 5-button remotes. The tab wasn't making consistent contact anymore.
I bent it back into position with needle-nose pliers, cleaned the contact points, and had him test every function: lock, unlock, panic, trunk release, and remote start. Then we walked around the car checking the proximity sensors at each door handle.
The real test was starting it ten times in a row. No more "Smart Key not detected" messages. No more waving the fob around hoping it would connect. Just normal operation like nothing ever happened.
He asked about getting a spare made while I was there. Smart move. Did an on-board programming sequence through the OBD port with my Autel IM608 Pro. Now he's got two working keys for way less than what the dealer wanted for one.
