Lexus smart key programming isn't a dealer-only job. The car's smart ECU checks the fob's transponder chip through a proximity antenna. Programming a new fob means registering its chip code with that ECU. I do it through the OBD port with a diagnostic computer. No dealer bay, no Lexus subscription software for most models on the road.
A customer at Nordstrom in Fillmore was sure her 2007 Lexus LS had to go to the dealer for a key. The dealer's website said so. Her friend confirmed it. A forum post she found agreed. All of them were either wrong or outdated.
