Got a call from a guy in Mission San Buenaventura over in Ventura. His 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass had been sitting in a carport for a few months while he dealt with some other stuff, and when he went to drive it again, the key would not turn in the ignition.
He had already sprayed half a can of WD-40 into the cylinder. That actually made it worse.
When I got there, I could feel it right away. The wafers inside the GM ignition lock cylinder were seized. The B44 key blank was original, worn smooth on the edges after 29 years of use. The cuts were so rounded the wafers had nothing left to read. On top of that, the WD-40 had turned into a sticky film mixed with old brass dust from the worn wafers.
I pulled the lock cylinder, cleaned it out, and replaced the wafer set. Then I cut a fresh B44 key by code so the depths were factory spec again, not copied from the worn original. Tested it in the ignition, both doors, and the trunk.
He kept turning the key back and forth in the ignition like he forgot how smooth it was supposed to feel.
