2005 Pontiac GTO
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is the FCC ID on the 2005 Pontiac GTO fob, and why does it matter?

The factory FCC ID is printed on the back of your fob. It tells us the exact fob configuration your vehicle was built to pair with, which drives what blank we pull and how we program it. If you're buying a replacement fob online, match that ID exactly. A fob with a different ID may physically resemble yours but won't program correctly to this car.

Q: How much does a 2005 Pontiac GTO key replacement cost through EZ Car Keyz?

Call us for current pricing. What I can tell you is it's a fraction of what the dealer wanted when I've had customers come to me after getting that quote first. Our price covers the key blank, blade cutting, programming, and mobile service to your location in Montecito. No surprise charges added at the end. The number you get on the phone is what you pay.

Q: Can I program a second key for my 2005 GTO myself, or does it need a shop?

This one gets asked a lot. The 2005 GTO does not have an owner-accessible onboard relearn sequence for remote head keys the way some domestic trucks from the same era do. You need a programmer that can communicate with the vehicle's immobilizer to register a new key. That means a dealer or a mobile locksmith with the right equipment.

Q: My GTO starts fine but the fob buttons stopped working. Is the key going bad?

Not necessarily. If the car starts, the transponder side of the key is fine. The remote functions run on a separate circuit powered by the CR2032. Nine times out of ten when the buttons die but the car still starts, it's a dead or dying battery. Swap the CR2032 first. If a fresh battery doesn't bring the buttons back, the issue is usually a cracked or corroded circuit board inside the housing, often from a drop.

2005 Pontiac GTO Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in the Upper Village area of Montecito on a Tuesday when I got the call. GTO owner, said he dropped his key on the garage floor and heard something crack. Car still started, but the fob face had split and the lock and unlock buttons were barely responding. He figured he needed a whole new key programmed from scratch.

When I pulled up, I looked at the housing before I said anything. The crack ran right across the front face, but the circuit board inside was intact. No broken traces, no cracked solder points. The buttons were misaligned because the housing was no longer holding everything flush against the board.

I had a replacement housing in the van. Transferred the board, reseated the battery contacts, popped in a fresh CR2032, and tested every button standing next to the car. Lock, unlock, and the third button all came back clean. No programming, no diagnostic tool, no dealer visit.

He had already gotten a quote from a dealership. I saved him a good chunk. He seemed more relieved about not losing a Tuesday than anything else.

Pontiac GTO Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What battery does the 2005 Pontiac GTO key fob use?▼

CR2032. It's a common size, easy to find at any pharmacy, auto parts store, or hardware store. The CR2032 is a thick 20mm coin cell, and it fits the remote head key's battery tray with a positive-side-up orientation. When the battery gets low on these, you'll usually notice reduced range before you get a complete failure. I always install a fresh one when I cut and program a replacement, so you're not starting the clock on a half-dead cell.
