Got a call from a guy near Isla Vista area in Goleta. His 2007 Saturn Aura XE wouldn't start after he had a spare cut at a hardware store. Key turned fine, engine cranked, but the security light on the dash just sat there glowing and the car refused to fire. Classic PK3+ rejection. The blank they used had no transponder chip in it, so the BCM saw a mechanical match but zero electronic handshake.
He told me he'd already sat in the car three times doing the 10-minute relearn cycle he found on a Saturn forum. Forty-five minutes of staring at a dashboard light. It didn't help because the problem wasn't a lost key code. The problem was the key itself had nothing for the system to read.
I cut a new key on the B111-PT blank with the correct Megamos ID 13 transponder and programmed it through the OBD-II port using the existing key as the master. The whole thing took about 20 minutes on site, right there in the parking lot.
He kept the hardware store key on his ring for the doors and trunk. Mechanical cuts were fine, it just can't start the car. Two keys for different jobs, which honestly is not the worst outcome. He drove off without having to tow it anywhere or wait three days at a dealer parts counter for a key order.
