Got a call from someone near the Santa Barbara Airport in Goleta. Their 2008 Saturn Aura would not start, and they had no spare key. Just one key that snapped right at the bow where the plastic meets the blade. They were holding both pieces in their hand like they could will them back together.
I got there in about 20 minutes. Set up on the hood and cut a new B111-PT blank on the portable machine, matched to the door lock since the original blade was cracked. Then I plugged into the OBD-II port to program the PK3+ transponder. The Body Control Module on these, the 15906895 or similar part number depending on build, needs to learn the new ID 13 chip resistance value before it will release the fuel injectors. That handshake took a couple of minutes.
Turned the key. Engine caught on the first crank. No theft light, no 10-minute lockout.
The part that got me was how quiet they went when it started. They had been talking the whole time I was cutting, nervous energy, asking questions. Then the engine turned over and they just stopped and stared at the gauge cluster for a few seconds. That pause where it sinks in that the problem is actually over.
Whole thing from phone call to driving away was under 45 minutes. A dealer would have needed the car towed in and three to five business days to order the blank and schedule the work.
