Got a call from someone near Lake Los Carneros Park in Goleta. Their 2009 Saturn Aura had one key left, and the blade was so worn down it barely turned the ignition. They had been wiggling it for weeks.
I pulled up and could see the problem before I even touched the car. The key blade had a visible twist near the tip and the cuts were rounded off from years of use. The transponder chip inside still worked, the security light wasn't acting up, but the mechanical side was done.
Cut a fresh B111-PT blade on the Condor using the door lock read, not the old key, since copying a worn key just copies the wear. Then I programmed the new PK3+ transponder through the OBD-II port. The Aura's relearn procedure has a ten-minute security countdown built into the BCM. You just wait. No shortcut.
While the timer ran, I tested the three remote buttons. Lock, unlock, trunk. All clean. Then the security light cycled off, I turned the key, and it fired right up.
The owner said they had called a dealer first. Got told to tow it in, leave it for a day or two. Instead they had a working key in about 30 minutes, standing right there by the car, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted.
That worn blade was one bad day away from snapping off in the cylinder.
