I got a call from a guy out in Cathedral Oaks, Goleta, on a weekday morning. He had driven to work the night before, parked the Aura in his driveway, and woke up to nothing. Key went in, turned, engine cranked, then stopped. Over and over. He thought it was a fuel issue. His neighbor thought it was the battery. He had already jumped it by the time he called me.

The key head had a hairline crack running right through it. Somewhere along the way, probably from being crammed onto a heavy keyring for years, the internal transponder had shifted just enough to read inconsistently. Some mornings it worked. That morning it didn't. The car's security system never got a clean signal, so it let the engine crank and then shut it down. Classic.
I cut a fresh key blade to match the lock, programmed the transponder through the OBD port in his driveway, and used his one still-sorta-working original to complete the add-a-key sequence while I still could. Tested starts, tested the column, walked him through keeping the keys separate on different rings going forward.
He had mentioned the dealer the way people mention a dentist. Like it was an option, technically, but not one he was looking forward to. Didn't need to go there. Job was done before he finished his second cup of coffee.
