2009 Saturn Aura
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is a transponder key and why can't I just cut a copy at the hardware store?

A hardware store duplicate is cut to match the blade shape, but it has no chip inside, or the wrong one. It'll open your door if your Aura doesn't have a keyed ignition interlock issue, but it won't start the car. The transponder inside the key head sends a signal the immobilizer is listening for every time you turn the ignition. No matching signal, no start.

Q: What kind of tools do you use to program a key for the Aura?

For cutting, I use dedicated automotive key machines that read the existing key profile or decode the lock directly. For programming, I'm working through the OBD port with professional automotive diagnostic and key programming equipment -- the same category of tools dealership service departments use. The investment in that equipment is significant, and knowing how to use it correctly on a GM product from this era is the part that actually matters.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2009 Aura. Is all-keys-lost harder or more expensive than just adding a spare?

It is a different procedure. When at least one working key is present, there's an onboard sequence available on this generation that speeds the job up considerably. All-keys-lost means that option is gone. The new key has to be registered to the vehicle through the OBD port using diagnostic equipment capable of reading and rewriting the immobilizer data without an existing key present to reference. It takes longer, requires more from the equipment, and costs more than a standard spare.

Q: My Aura cranks fine but shuts off after a second or two. Could that be a key problem?

That's the immobilizer doing its job, just not for the right reason. Cranks and immediately dies is the pattern when the vehicle security system doesn't get a clean read from the transponder. Usually a damaged key head, a cracked or delaminated chip, or a key that was copied without proper programming. Worth ruling out before chasing fuel or electrical gremlins.

2009 Saturn Aura Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy out in Cathedral Oaks, Goleta, on a weekday morning. He had driven to work the night before, parked the Aura in his driveway, and woke up to nothing.

Key went in, turned, engine cranked, then stopped. Over and over. He thought it was a fuel issue. His neighbor thought it was the battery. He had already jumped it by the time he called me.

I knew what it was before I pulled up.

The key head had a hairline crack running right through it. Somewhere along the way, probably from being crammed onto a heavy keyring for years, the internal transponder had shifted just enough to read inconsistently. Some mornings it worked. That morning it didn't. The car's security system never got a clean signal, so it let the engine crank and then shut it down. Classic.

I cut a fresh key blade to match the lock, programmed the transponder through the OBD port in his driveway, and used his one still-sorta-working original to complete the add-a-key sequence while I still could. Tested starts, tested the column, walked him through keeping the keys separate on different rings going forward.

He had mentioned the dealer the way people mention a dentist. Like it was an option, technically, but not one he was looking forward to. Didn't need to go there. Job was done before he finished his second cup of coffee.

Saturn Aura Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 2009 Saturn Aura key have a remote built in, or is it just the key?▼

On this vehicle, the key is a transponder key -- a key blade with a chip in the head. No remote buttons, no fob battery, no lock and unlock transmitter built into the key itself. The transponder handles the immobilizer communication at the ignition, and that's it. If you're looking for remote entry, that's a separate key fob, and it's a different conversation. The key replacement job here is cut the blade to your vehicle and program the transponder chip.
