Out in Pierpont, I got a call from a guy who had already paid another locksmith to do a key replacement on his 2017 V60. The car would crank, fire briefly, then cut out. Every single time. The other locksmith blamed the immobilizer module and walked. The customer was stuck in his driveway with a car that almost started and a key that was technically programmed but functionally useless.
I asked him a few questions over the phone before I drove out. The way he described it, crank, brief catch, immediate stall, told me what I needed to know. That pattern on a P3 Volvo almost always means the key enrollment did not complete correctly. The immobilizer read the key, decided something was wrong with the registration data, and shut fuel down. The module itself was almost certainly fine.
When I got there, I confirmed the blade cut first. That was good. The problem was in how the previous attempt was done. On an all-keys-lost job for this generation of Volvo, you cannot simply go through the OBD port and expect it to work. The security architecture requires pulling the central electronics module, reading the secured memory off the bench, generating the correct key data from that read, writing it back, reinstalling the module, and then completing enrollment through the diagnostic port. If you skip the bench read, the key data is incomplete and the car behaves exactly the way his did.
I pulled the module, did the bench work, reinstalled it, and finished the programming sequence on site. Three consecutive start cycles, clean every time.
He had already paid once for a job that was not finished. I made sure he watched every step this time so he understood exactly what was different. The dealer quoted him significantly more than what I charged, and that was before factoring in the tow they wanted and the wait on a key being ordered.
